Jannis varelas biography definition
His work investigates the state of contemporary human condition. His themes are often based on socially induced phenomena, approached with playfulness, primitivism and surrealism. The signs, symbols and marks in Varelas’ work recall automatic painting or children’s drawings, with added dynamism deriving from the artist’s highly physical, gestural technique.
Playfully fusing abstraction and realistic representation, he constructs reality from fragments: like in archeological excavations, lived moments are presented to us in a seemingly arbitrary composition of random traces.
